IPL 2021: Royal Challengers Bangalore opener Devdutt Padikkal tests positive for coronavirus

Royal Challengers Bangalore opener Devdutt Padikkal became the third IPL player to have contracted the novel coronavirus after he tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday. Padikkal has been isolated from the rest of the squad and is in quarantine.

Padikkal is now expected to miss at least two games for RCB. On Saturday, Delhi Capitals' spinner Axar Patel also tested positive for the coronavirus. While the DC squad is based in Mumbai, the members of the RCB team are in Chennai where the side is scheduled to play the tournament opener against Mumbai Indians on April 9.

Padikkal emerged as one of the biggest revelations of IPL 2020 as he was in fine form at the top of the order for RCB. Padikkal amassed 473 runs in his 15 IPL games at an average of 31.53.

Padikkal was in a rich vein of form in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where he scored a total of 218 runs at an average of 43.60 in six matches for Karnataka. Further, in Vijay Hazare Trophy, Padikkal piled up a mountain of 737 runs by scoring them at a towering average of 147.40 in seven matches.

IPL 2021 starts on April 9 with the Virat Kohli-led side locking horns with defending champions Mumbai Indians in Chennai, to mark the tournament opener
